The Image: With cinematography by Sven Nykvist who had more than cut his teeth directing anxiety ridden religious infused films for Ingmar Bergman, scenes like this were never going to be that challenging. And here the blocking and mise en scene are pretty good - theaestheticof... - but not I would say, exceptional (perhaps being in colour? Does that sound crass?)
Anyway, the main thing I want to draw attention to is the dismal horror of Jane Fonda's wardrobe - theaestheticof... - that ghastly jumper and frumpy skirt in a hundred shades of, mm, brown. I'm quite upset! (And brown boots too!) The 80s have a lot to answer for!
By the way, this is Anne Bancroft no less as Mother Miriam Ruth - theaestheticof... and this is Meg Tilly as somewhat troubled (!) Sister Agnes - theaestheticof...
